Projects in Millennia Institute

The Eco-Sustainability Leadership Academy Symposium (TESLA) 2017
This is a competition-based project where I participated in a team of 4. In this project, my team had come up with different ideas on how to make sustainable living a part of our HDB houses. Putting all our ideas together, we had to come up with a poster where we also had to present it to the judges.
From this project, I was able to appreciate and understand the importance of a sustainable way of living. Through this project I had gained several skills:
-
Presentation skills: I was able to practise on my presentation skills as I had to present my idea to the judges. It was a challenge for me but I managed to stay calm and got my points across clearly.
-
Teamwork: As this is a competition-based project, I had to work closely with my team members to come up with the group poster.
-
Research skills: I had to collect and evaluate all the ideas I had in mind before chosing the most suitable one. There were many challenges finding the right idea as some do seem interesting but in the long run sight, it was not feasible. Hence through this project, I was able to collect, evaluate, organise and review all the ideas before coming up with the end product.

The Blood Donation Drive
I was one of the team members representing the Service-learning Club (SLC), running the blood donation drive with the Singapore Red Cross on the 27th of September 2017. This event was held in school.
In this event, I hold the responsibility of publicity. I was the scriptwriter for a short skit that was acted out to the school during the morning assembly. I was also in charge of handling the mascot that was loaned to us by the Singapore Red Cross.
During the actual event, I was tasked to set up the school hall into the different sections for the blood donation exercise. Besides that, I assisted the doctors by calling out the students to enter the check-up booth when it was their turn. I also oversee the other sections such as the refreshment site where I ensured those that had donated blood had sufficient nutrients before leaving the hall. At the end of the event, I was also tasked to tear down the set-up and helped the Singapore Red Cross with their packing.
From this project I had learned and discovered several things about myself:
-
Communication skills: This was the first time I had to liaise with a big organisation outside of the school setting. It was also an event that involved the whole school; from the students to even the teachers and staff. With this, communication was essential as information had to be relayed accurately and appropriately. We had to also recruit people to participate in this event through different forms of communication. Seeing how the event was a success, I felt that my communication skill has improved.
-
Leadership skills: I hold the responsibility of coordinating and delegating the lines and roles to my tea members for active publicity. It felt that the publicity was effective seeing the number of people that participated in this event. With this, I felt that the script I wrote and delegated to my team members was appropriate.
