Projects in Ngee Ann Polytechnic

Capstone Project [October 2020 - February 2021]

1

This is a project under the 'Capstone' module. This is a 'Service-Learning (S-L) Advocacy Project'. The topic for this project is Early Literacy.

I am the group leader and a part of the Logistics team. As a Logistics team member, I worked on the monthly newsletter that touches on the 4 aspects of literacy (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). The resources we have come as a group was intended for the parents to engage with their children in the home setting. Overall, this project is to encourage more parental involvement in a child's literacy development.

From this project, I had gain valuable experiences.

The skills that I was able to use and work on are:

  • Interview skills: Had the opportunity to interview 2 Early Childhood (EC) professionals, to find out about the gaps and needs present in regards to Early Literacy

  • Teamwork skills: Working with the other 5 members throughout this S-L project. I was also able to work well with my Logistic member in completing the 4 monthly newsletters.

  • Research skills: In this project, there was plenty of research done to ensure the points made were credible and concrete. This was important as we are doing advocacy and being a reliable source would make us look credible.

  • Reflective skills: Throughout this project, reflection plays an integral part. Reflection allows me to know if I was on track for this project and what were improvements to be made. This is a valuable skill as in the working industry, the reflection would be used in lesson developments and personal evaluation on lessons conducted.

Jiggle, Read & Rhyme with National Library Board (NLB)

2

This is a project under the module 'Collaboration with Families'. This is a project that we worked with NLB, to organise a 'Jiggle, Read, & Rhyme'. It is a workshop for parents and children age 1 to 3 years old.

In this workshop, we had a mixture of story-telling and songs. I was in charge of reading the book 'Rainbow Fish: Opposites by Marcus Pfister. Parents were engaged and followed through the actions I did such as stretching my arms wide to show 'big'. They were even encouraging their little ones to do it too.

Overall, our workshop was well-received by parents and their little ones. Both parents and children seem to be engaged and enjoyed the entire session.

I have gained several skills through this exposure which are:

  • Communication skills: In this project, I had to not only communicate with my team members and lecturers. I had to also liaise with the NLB staff in charge of this workshop for logistic matters. I also communicated with the parents who attended our workshop.

  • Creative Expression: In this project, I had to use my creativity and imagination to create props and decorative materials for the workshop.

  • Teamwork: As a group of 6, we had synergy and teamwork during the planning, execution, and even the wrapping up of this project. With teamwork, this project was an extreme success.
