Klang Study Trip
This is a 4D3N study trip that I had participated in October 2018 as a student from Ngee Ann Poly's 'School of the Humanities & Social Sciences (HMS)' sector.
-
Planned a full-day lesson plan for a Kindergarten 2 (K2) class of 25 refugee children as a team of 4.
-
In-charge of the Arts lesson where I conducted and demonstrated to the children how they can create a finger puppet like the characters found in the book being read to them.
-
Tasked to hand out the Children's Day gifts Ngee Ann Poly has prepared for them.
-
Supervised and managed children while one of my team members conducted her portion of the lesson.
-
Discussed and reflected on the 3 days spent observing, interacting, teaching, and even learning about the lives of the children in the school.
What did I do?
Through this experience, it has not only ignited more passion in me to nurture young children but also a bigger sense of compassion. I have always been interested in humanitarian work. From this short yet full of insightful lessons, I was able to understand how we need compassion and empathy too while teaching young children. We can be the biggest lovers of young children but if we teach with no compassion or empathy, we will not be able to relate or create a bond with the child. Despite this trip being a short one, I was able to create a relationship with the children of the class I was attached to.
I was also able to hone my teamwork skills as I had to work with another 3 group members to come up with the lesson plan. It was a new environment for all of us to teach. Despite that, I have learned that it is important to step in and help even if I am not in charge of that portion of the lesson. Working together means helping out and not competing to see who can do it better.
Lastly, I was able to work on my communication skills. Not only I had to communicate with my team members and children. I had to also talk to the lecturers and to the rest of the NP students. We had a reflection on all 3 nights. Those were opportunities for me to communicate my thoughts in a clear and understanding manner.
What have I gained from this?
